Mettl was founded in 2010 by Ketan Kapoor & Tonmoy Shingal. In 2011 they received a $350,000 angel investment from Blume Ventures. In 2021 Mettl raised $4 million in a Series A round. Later that year, they released a gamified case study simulator. They won Top Startup Award At TiEcon.

In 2017, Mettl launched their Mettl Personality Profiler (MPP) based on psychometry, and later that year they created a dark personality trait inventory that consists of 6 dark traits: Opportunism, Self-Obsession, Insensitivity, Temperamental, Impulsiveness, and Thrill-Seeking. In 2018 Mettl got acquired by Mercer, and in 2019 they appointed a new CEO, Siddhartha Gupta.
