Managing Editor Job Description Template
We are searching for a professional and productive Managing Editor to oversee our editorial team. In your role as the Managing Editor, you will provide support for editors and writers in the process of publishing content, which includes monitoring their work, QAing the articles they edited, and providing constructive feedback. You will also train and mentor new editors and create language and style guidelines as well as other writing or editing guidelines they should follow.
As a Managing Editor, you will assign topics as needed, review drafts, and ensure all content brought to the Editor-in-Chief meets our high standard of quality. An effective Managing Editor will understand how to organize their team’s time to maximize quality while still meeting deadlines as set by the publication schedule. You will also maintain an ongoing editorial calendar, paying attention to both daily editorial matters and long-term planning.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with the Editor-in-Chief to facilitate the ongoing operations of the publication
- Edit articles to ensure proper spelling, grammar, and formatting
- Align written work with our specific in-house style guide
- Hold regular meetings with the editorial team to stay up to date on assignments and upcoming publications
- Attend senior staff meetings to inform the Editor-in-Chief of any issues that require their attention
- Stay up to date on the latest developments in the field associated with our publication
- Hire, train, and manage new editors
- Write additional content as needed to address gaps in the editorial calendar
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field
- Excellent writing skills
- 3–5 years of experience in a similar role
- Robust knowledge of Associated Press or Chicago formatting and style
- Expertise with document processing and layout software applications
- Extensive experience managing a team of subordinates
- Ability to communicate effectively with subordinates and superiors
- Eye for detail
